Local music has finally taken another stab at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater.
Used mostly for community theater, local music has shied away from the outdoor venue for years. Perhaps it was the mosquitos? Or maybe it was the whole four miles you have to drive on Indiana 43 North to get there? For whatever reason, live music was seldom heard there unless it was out of the orchestra pit for The Sound of Music.
This summer, the brand new LayFlats Art Fest will test the confines. It's being billed as "a true Taste" of local music and art, and it's slated for Aug. 18 at the amphitheater, located at 4449 Indiana 43 N. The festival was created to give local music fans a chance to rock out in the sun to their local favorites. Already booked is the basic core of the local rock scene: The PMG, The Half Rats, Oh Discretion!, Fergus Daly Band, Double A Daddies, Moonshine Mason and the Rot Gut Gang, Atarilogic and AZ.
Local artists will show their work and local non-profit organizations will be on hand, too. Admission will be $10.
I applaud the use of this venue, and getting this many local bands together is something special. Still, bringing in some new talent or another big name might be needed to make this festival a success on the music side of things. While hardcore local scene supporters will be there in a flash to hear the opening beat or riff, the casual music fan will only need to amble on down to the Knickerbocker, Hunter's Pub Down Under or Downtown Records to see these same bands a few weeks before or after LayFlats.
