Travis Easter and Johnny Klemme are huge fans of local music and art -- so much that the two from West Lafayette have created the LayFlats Arts Festival, which will feature about 20 bands from Greater Lafayette. LayFlats runs from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater, 4449 Indiana 43 N.

1 What is the goal of the LayFlats Arts Festival?

Klemme: The goals are two-fold, both community and cultural awareness and to generate increased and continued development and funding for local arts-based charitable organizations. There are so many talented artists, bands and musicians in this area and so many wonderful people, business owners and groups that support them that we wanted to bring all of that together in one location, one great local celebration — all to benefit the local community arts-based charities and more specifically programs for children.

2 Besides the music, what else can people expect?

Easter: The fiddlers from our very own Indiana Fiddlers' Gathering will be on hand with a workshop geared towards kids. CAI, the Contemporary Art Initiative, will be putting on an interactive children's art workshop where they will create an art piece throughout the day.

3 What was your strategy behind booking all of these bands?

E: This was probably the most difficult part of the planning. We wanted to make sure that we represented a very wide range of music, diverse in its form and appealing to everyone.

4 Why have LayFlats at the amphitheater?

K: We're very fortunate to have such a wonderful venue to use in Tippecanoe County. The parks department staff have experience with a wide variety of events and are eager to celebrate local arts and culture with all of the people and organizations involved.

5 What about rain?

K: "Rain, rain go away/Come again some other day." Let's all do a

no-rain dance.
